Surfers might visit a site like that once or twice, but they typically get tired of all the extra widgets and end up preferring simpler, more easy to read websites. You don’t want too many bells and whistles, just a basic design that can deliver your content.
Good Content
This is, if you don’t plan on providing all the content yourself. Many web designers create all the content themselves while others hire it out to a third party content provider. Either way, you need to make sure the content is good, because it’s an example of the kind of content they’ll provide you with. So make sure that they actually do provide their clients with real, quality content.
Cool Design
Just because the website should be simple doesn’t mean it shouldn’t have a great, cool look to it. You should look for solid, clean color schemes, something that really grabs the eye. Look for clear, coherent layouts that lead the eye well.
All in all you want good content and a clear, bold design. From there, you can look for other things like price, marketing options, hosting options and so on, but without good content and design, your website is not likely to succeed on the level you’d like it to. Make sure they can answer all of your questions and deal with you frankly and honestly, or you won’t have the great working relationship you need to produce a great website together.
